Amara Raja’s Next Charge: From Lead-Acid to BESS

The New-Energy Bet!

Amara Raja Energy & Mobility is at an important point in its evolution. Its established lead-acid battery business continues to provide scale, profitability and strong relationships across automotive and industrial markets, while the company invests heavily in lithium-ion cells, EV battery packs and battery energy storage systems (BESS). The strategic challenge is no longer whether it should enter new energy, but how efficiently it can build competitive technology and scale without weakening the economics of its core business. In FY26, the company generated ₹1,118 crore of operating cash flow, but capital expenditure of ₹1,341 crore turned free cash flow negative.

The company remains anchored by its lead-acid operations, which serve automotive, industrial, telecom and other applications, while it has been building capabilities across the new-energy value chain through its E-Positive Energy Labs, battery-pack operations and planned cell manufacturing. FY26 consolidated revenue rose 7.5% to ₹13,814 crore, while profit after tax fell 5% to about ₹896 crore. That included a net exceptional gain of ₹255 crore, mainly insurance receipts for a plant fire; profit before exceptional items fell 18%. The balance sheet provides room to invest, with debt-to-equity at about 0.03. The key question is therefore not immediate financial survival, but whether the capital committed to new energy can generate attractive returns as the business scales.
