Appliances Going Smart Making Homes Connected.

India’s consumer durables sector has undergone a significant transformation over the past decade. What was once largely a market for basic refrigerators, semi-automatic washing machines and conventional cooling and cooking products is increasingly becoming a market for automation, energy efficiency, connectivity and convenience. The broader consumer-durables market is estimated at around ₹2.8 lakh crore in FY25 and is projected to reach ₹5.39 lakh crore by FY30, implying a 14% CAGR, according to 1Lattice. Growth is being supported by first-time adoption in underpenetrated categories, rising incomes and premiumisation as existing consumers move towards larger, smarter and more energy-efficient appliances.

Over the last 10 years, this shift has been visible across almost every major category. Washing machines have moved from semi-automatic models towards fully automatic top-load and front-load machines, with inverter motors, steam functions, AI-assisted cycles and app connectivity. Refrigerators have evolved from basic single-door models to frost-free, multi-door and convertible formats with inverter compressors and smart features. Fixed-speed air conditioners have increasingly given way to inverter models with higher energy ratings, while cleaning has expanded from conventional vacuum cleaners to cordless wet-and-dry products and robotic vacuum-mop systems. Newer categories such as air purifiers, dishwashers, air fryers, induction cooktops and smart-home devices are also widening the addressable market. The scale of this shift is visible in smart homes as well. India’s smart-home market is projected to increase from ₹8,000 crore in 2023 to ₹36,000 crore by 2028, according to Redseer. This points to a broader transition from mechanisation to automation and, increasingly, to sensing and connectivity, where appliances are being sold not only for their basic function but also for convenience, energy efficiency and control.
